Vigore

Case Study

PROJECT GOAL:
For this project, we were asked to design a sustainable package for a men’s product of our choice. The design had to incorporate Futurism style and design elements.

PROJECT EXPERIENCE:
I honestly never designed a product aimed towards a male audience before, therefore, to understand what a possible male consumer could be looking for when buying a product, I created a persona. The persona includes basic information about the person, such as their age, location, interests, and things they love and dislike.

With that in mind, I thought it would be interesting to design a brand for a men’s leave-in conditioner. I honestly don’t see a lot of hair products (outside of common products, like shampoo and conditioner) that promote hair care for men, so I thought it would be a fitting product for this project. To help me explore some ideas, I created a mind map. The mind map focuses on the branding of the product (including terms related to masculinity and Futurism) and different types of sustainable packing. I also created a mood board that visually expresses my exploration.

Sketch ideas for the logo and product pitch.

The next step was sketching ideas for the product’s logo and pitch. For the logo design I made a man’s side profile, making sure to make it look geometrical. I added gradients to the face to make it look like shading, as I noticed that lots of Futurism art pieces had that. For the company’s name, I decided to go with a masculine word: “vigore” (vigor). For the product design, I wanted a cover that was clean and simple. I added a speck-like texture to the blue rectangle, and also included a “aluminum bottle 100% infinitely recyclable” label. I also used a simple color palette. One that used lots of blues, grays, tans, and hints of red. For the fonts, I chose some that looked clean and legible.

PROJECT OUTCOME:
I honestly really struggled with this project. I had a hard time understanding the Futurism style and choosing elements that would best fit the product I chose. Although I did struggle with the overall style of the design, I am proud of the end product. I was able to achieve a design that was clean and masculine, and I hope it’s appealing for possible customers to buy this product if they ever saw it in stores. I learned a lot about the Futurism style and I hope to incorporate said style in future projects as well.
